What Are the CCDA (Cisco Certified Design Associate) Requirements?

Certifications prove that IT professionals have the specialized knowledge needed to perform at the highest level of efficiency in their respective role. In an industry that is ever-changing, even the most experienced IT professionals should continue to train and improve.

Who should get the CCDA?

The Cisco Certified Design Associate course is designed for network administrators who need to advance their knowledge in order to design networks for campuses and data centers. The training covers voice and wireless networks as well as network security.

What are the prerequisites?

Before your network administrator takes the CCDA course, you’ll need them to take the Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) certification. This covers installing, operating and troubleshooting small networks and basic network security. From here, they will be able to go straight into CCDA, but it would be useful for them to also get the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Routing and Switching certification. This moves them up into installation and configuration of medium-sized networks with routers and switches and is generally a good certification for anyone involved in network administration.

What should you consider before attending training?

Be sure they have met the basic prerequisites. It is also worth looking at the other CCNA certifications - which cover data center work, security, service provider, wireless, cloud, and collaboration. Consider what kind of networks they are currently working on and what kind you’ll need them to work on in the future before making a final decision as to which CCNA certification(s) is most appropriate.

While they certainly can take the CCDA with only the CCENT, they will benefit from having a better understanding of all the issues of how networks work before attempting to design their own.

What can you do with a CCDA?

The CCDA is useful for high end network administrators, as it can help them better understand the design and architecture of larger networks. It is also a stepping stone to the Cisco Certified Design Professional, which requires both the CCDA and CCNA Routing and Switching as prerequisites.
