CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) is it Worth It?

If you employ IT professionals, you already know there are a bewildering variety of certifications out there, especially if you include vendor-specific courses. Deciding which ones your employees need can be a challenge. Do they need the CASP certification? Let's find out.

What is CASP?

CASP (CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner) is an advanced certification designed to help experienced IT professionals better implement cyber security protocols. In this day and age, with high profile security breaches seeming to be disturbingly common, cyber security is growing in importance and more cyber security professionals are needed to combat this continual problem.

Why take CASP?

The most important reason is that it is vendor neutral. The course will train your employees to work with hardware and software from multiple sources.

Also, the government likes CASP. The Department of Defense approves it for their requirements, and it is compliant under the Federal Information Security Management Act. If your company works with the government, CASP is almost always a requirement.

Who should take CASP?

In short: Experienced security professionals. CASP is recommended for individuals who already have at least 10 years' experience in IT administration and 5 years direct, hands-on experience in technical security. Although the course has no specific prerequisites, it is intended to follow on from the CompTIA Security+ course.

In other words, this course is intended to give advanced level security skills and the ability to design and engineer secure solutions in all kinds of environments, including the most complex.

Ideally, students should also have solid training in network administration, and should have experience dealing with complex networks in the real world.

What Skills will it Validate?

CASP helps with transferable skills that include critical thinking and judgment. Also, understanding the ever changing nature of security threats. The exam itself covers four areas - enterprise security, risk management, security research and analysis, and communications and business.
